Mauricio Pochettino has conceded it’s impossible to guarantee that Harry Kane will stay at Tottenham and the club can’t force him to remain at White Hart Lane.

The striker is considered among the very best in the world and has understandably been linked with a potential move elsewhere.

Manchester United and Real Madrid are two clubs persistently linked with an interest in Kane.

Pochettino hopes that the England international will choose to remain with Spurs, but the club must work at that.

‘Harry is so special,’ said the Argentinean. ‘Because he loves Tottenham and he has always been at Tottenham.

‘But we need to be clever how we manage him. The player needs to choose to stay here, you cannot force the player to stay here.

‘Our job is to try to work together and try to achieve everything we want at the club and of course Harry is such a special player. I told him only a few special players can spend all their career in one club.

‘I think Harry is this type of a player who can stay all his career at Tottenham because he loves Tottenham, but in football you cannot be sure.

‘It is today, the present. Tomorrow and after tomorrow you need to doubt. That is why it is so important to work together and try to achieve all that you want.’

Pochettino’s comments come as Kane revealed that he is not currently in talks with the club over a new contract.

The 24-year-old also said the club needs to start winning trophies if he is to be fully satisfied.

‘I’ve always said [what the club needs to do]: keep progressing, keep getting better, start winning trophies,’ he said. ‘That’s the aim, as long as the club keep doing that then, yeah, I’m happy here.’

Tottenham last won a trophy in 2008, when they lifted the League Cup.
