Chelsea are ready to make a £20 million bid for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The 20-year-old is rated as one of the most promising young talents in the Bundesliga, and has scored four goals – and registered two assists – in his 11 league outings this season.

And, according to The Sun, he is Chelsea’s No.1 transfer target when the window reopens next month, though they will offer to loan him back to Leverkusen for the remainder of the campaign.

Interestingly, the report claims that Antonio Conte has had no involvement in the deal, which could hint at fresh tension between the Italian and the club’s hierarchy.

Bailey has been identified by the club’s recruitment department, who have pulled off similar deals before; Kurt Zouma, for example, was loaned back to Saint-Etienne.

Nevertheless, Conte is known to want more firepower and pace in his attack, and Bailey – who is one of the quickest players in German football right now – provides both.

The Blues have tracked Bailey for 18 months, even watching him several times while he was still at Belgian side Genk.

Their interest in the Jamaica international has ramped up more recently, with scouts from the west London club travelling to Germany on three occasions to watch him this season.

However, the Blues also face competition from Barcelona, who have watched Bailey several times also, though are confident they can beat the Catalan club to his signature.
