Dzagoev appeared to be offside (Picture: BT Sport)

Manchester United found themselves 1-0 down at half-time against Russian outfit CSKA Moscow but were they victims of an offside goal?

The Red Devils were nowhere near their best but were victims of a late sucker punch in the first half after some controversial officiating.

A pull-back reached Brazilian Vitinho, whose shot bounced off the back of Alan Dzagoev on its way into the back of the net.

Dzagoev was clearly offside in normal circumstance but Daley Blind, who had slid off the pitch, may have been considered to be playing him onside.

Rules state that a ‘defending player who leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on the goal line for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play or until the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line.’

So Blind wasn’t given permission to leave the pitch and should therefore be considered to be playing Dzagoev offside.

Clear as mud!

Just to add extra confusion – Vitinho has been handed the goal and we’re all expected to just forget about it touching Dzagoev full stop.

What a bonkers situation!
