Santi Cazorla’s hopes of making his Arsenal return in January have taken a fresh blow after the Spanish midfielder revealed he has undergone another operation.

The 32-year-old has been out of action since last October when he picked up an injury in a Champions League group stage match against Ludogoretes.

Cazorla was initially expected to miss only a few months but he sustained an infection during surgery and was subsequently told by doctors he was fortunate to still be walking.

Arsene Wenger, who described the injury as the worst he has seen in his entire managerial career, hoped to be able to call upon Cazorla again in the new year but that now looks to be out of the question.

Cazorla wrote on Twitter: ‘There is some discomfort in the tendon that has emerged over the last few days.

‘I have had to undergo surgery. It is delaying the date of my return to the training ground.

‘I maintain the dream and motivation to enjoy my great passion of soccer.’
