Mohamed Salah chose not to celebrate his goal against Chelsea on Saturday but it was not a mark of respect to his former club, rather, a tribute to those who had been killed in the Egypt mosque attacks.

The Liverpool attacker opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw against Antonio Conte’s side, with Willian snatching a late equaliser, but simply raised his arms.

While some suggested the move in front of the Kop was a sign of respect towards a side he made 19 appearances for, it’s now been revealed that it was a gesture towards the 305 killed in Friday’s terrorist attack in Egypt, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The horrific attack in Sinai was one of the most deadly in recent memory and Salah was keen to pay tribute to the victims of his homeland.

Asked how Salah had taken the news, Klopp said: ‘It’s not the place to talk about this.

‘Our life in football as a professional is nobody cares how we feel. We have to deliver. Obviously he was able to do that.’

Salah tweeted on Friday in the aftermath of the attack: ‘My sincere condolences to the Egyptian people and all the families of the martyrs of El Arish mosque.’
