Steven Gerrard rates Chelsea’s defeat to Roma as one of the worst displays he has ever seen from the Blues under Antonio Conte.

Chelsea were handed a beating in Rome after a dreadful defensive performance and Gerrard believes Conte disrespected the Italians.

Conte left Eden Hazard behind Alvaro Morata and Gerrard thinks the Blues boss’ attacking approach was a mistake.

‘I think Conte has disrespected Roma today,’ said Gerrard on BT Sport.

‘He went to Atletico Madrid and played Hazard behind Morata and had a lot of bodies behind the ball, packing the midfield.

‘Today he put out a very, very bold team selection and it’s backfired on him.’

The result kicks Chelsea off top spot in their Champions League group, but the loss was softened by the fact Atletico Madrid drew against Qarabag FK.

Gerrard urged Conte to get his defence in order after putting together a resilient back three last season.

‘That’s up there with the worst I’ve seen Chelsea since he’s come in,’ he continued.

‘Defensively all over the place. They haven’t had a settle back four for several games.

‘He doesn’t seem to know what positions they should be in. Gary Cahill’s one minute left-sided centre-back, then he’s right centre-back.

‘The Chelsea sides over the years are always solid defensively, they all know what they’re doing and it’s a solid machine.

‘It doesn’t look anywhere near that.’
