Liverpool fans have been left annoyed for a second time in as many days after an identical challenge to the one Sadio Mane was sent off for received no punishment in West Ham’s game against Huddersfield.
Hammers centre-back Winston Reid challenged for the ball with Town forward Steve Mounie during Monday’s night’s game, and inadvertently kicked him in the side of the face with his boot.
Mounie, Huddersfield’s club record signing, went down holding his face but only a free-kick was given, despite Mane being sent off for his similar challenge on Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson on Saturday.
It follows hot on the heels of a near identical challenge from Matt Richie in Newcastle’s win over Swansea on Sunday, with the only difference being the severity of the injury sustained by Ederson.
Mounie was fine to continue, though that did not stop Liverpool fans from venting their fury on social media and arguing that the challenge was no different from the foul Mane committed.
An image emerged on Monday afternoon showing the full extent of the facial injuries Ederson suffered – and the vast number of stitches he needed – though Liverpool are expected to appeal the decision regardless.
Rules for dangerous play dictate that Mane will miss three matches, though the Reds believe that is an excessive punishment and will put together a case which will be heard by an FA panel on Tuesday.
