Jamie Redknapp believes Chelsea summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko should be given an opportunity to showcase his talent at Wembley against Tottenham.

The midfielder is yet to play for the Blues following his £40million move from Monaco due to a knee injury sustained during his time in France.

But Antonio Conte hinted he may give Bakayoko his Chelsea debut in Sunday’s clash against London rivals Spurs.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Italian boss said: ‘I’m not worried about this and, for sure, at this moment it’s not simple but we must be strong to face this situation and it’s very important that I don’t find excuses.

‘Bakayoko is improving very well. He’s not at top physical condition but he could be in contention for the game because I don’t have any other midfielders available.

‘I have to decide. This situation is not easy at the moment. It could force me to take different decisions. At the moment some players are not 100 per cent.

‘[Alvaro] Morata is another player who needs to improve and find the right physical condition.

‘I have to make difficult decisions. Bakayoko could be in contention for the game against Tottenham.’

Bakayoko may start for the Premier League champions after Cesc Fabregas was sent off against Burnley in the opening round of fixtures and Redknapp ‘hopes’ to see the France international get an opportunity.

‘If you think back to last season, Dele [Alli] got a couple of goals for Tottenham,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports.

‘His positioning caused Chelsea so many problems – with no [Nemanja] Matic, I hope Conte goes for Bakayoko.

‘If he plays today he can show us how good he is – in the short-term it obviously looks like bad business [selling Matic to Manchester United], but Bakayoko is 22 and in the long-term it might be a good deal.

‘The only issue is he’s had a few injuries so might not be ready to start.’

Redknapp added: ‘Chelsea have got to stop Alli’s movement and Eriksen, who is like a ghost in the final third and impressed last season against them.’
