Jamie Carragher has called on Chelsea to get back to basics and avoid panicking after their opening day defeat to Burnley drew comparisons to their ill-fated campaign under Jose Mourinho.

The nine-man Blues fell to a shock 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge and face a testing trip to Wembley next to take on Tottenham, who they fought for the Premier League title last season.

Chelsea similarly lost their opening match the season Mourinho was fired as their campaign unravelled, and Carragher believes they can prevent that from happening by being solid and playing for a draw against Spurs.

Asked if it was time to panic in a special episode of Monday Night Football, he said: ‘No. Chelsea need to do the exact opposite.

‘If you go back two years, when they had their first game when they were champions and they played at home to Swansea. They drew the game, not a great result, and obviously had the situation with the club doctor.

‘And all of a sudden after one game Chelsea were under pressure. And it felt like people were fanning the flames. The story just seemed to get bigger and bigger, with players, with Jose Mourinho, until eventually he lost his job.’

He continued: ‘They’ve only lost one game at home. What they should be thinking now is: Relax.

‘They’ve got two games until the transfer window is finished, in that time Conte needs a couple of players I would say. It needs strengthening, especially in the wing-back positions.

‘But next week, the mentality for Chelsea has to be: go there and don’t get beat. Take your point. Everton at home the following week, get three points.

‘Try and go into the international break with four points, you’ll maybe be three points off the top. Not the end of the world.

‘Stop this sort of tidal wave of negativity, as we saw with Costa today in the press, as we saw with Conte – the way he’s speak to the press there’s something going on between him and the board – I think that’s got to stop.

‘And just remember, it is one game. It’s a bad defeat, get your head back on, and as Conte said, they don’t want another Jose season. And that’s the way to fix it.’
