La Liga president Javier Tebas claims Manchester United would not have faced the same problems as Paris Saint-Germain if they had tried to sign Neymar.

PSG have finally completed their world-record deal for the Brazil international after his £198 million release clause was activated on Thursday.

But the French club ran into difficulty when lawyers Juan de Dios Crespo and Marcos Motta turned up to pay Neymar’s buyout clause at La Liga’s headquarters in Madrid.

Their attempt to pay the fee was rejected by La Liga, who argued that the deal would be in breach of Financial Fair Play regulations and their decision was also to protect Spain’s top clubs.

‘If the player pays the clause, Barcelona cannot let him leave,’ Tebas told RAC1.

‘What we want to understand is the origin of this €222m, if it is illegal.
