Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made a surprise comment about Danny Welbeck’s £16million transfer to the Emirates Stadium.

Welbeck signed for the Gunners from Manchester United over a week ago and Wenger finally took time out today to reveal his thoughts on the player.

But the Frenchman ended up creating more questions than answers after saying the deal only happened because he left London to travel to Rome, but refused to give more details.

‘If I had not been away on deadline day, Welbeck would not have signed. That’s the truth,’ said Wenger.

‘The advantage of that day was I got up at 6am and was available the whole day.’

‘I will tell you the story one day.’

Wenger also said that he would have preferred to take Welbeck on-loan, but is ‘happy’ to have signed the England man on a permanent transfer.

Asked if he would initially have preferred a loan, Wenger said: ‘With an option to buy yes. In the end, when it was a permanent transfer or loan with an option to buy, I was happy to buy permanently.’

Asked to clarify if that meant he favoured a loan, Wenger added: ‘At start of day, he was only available on loan. At the end of the day, I agreed.’

The 23-year-old is in line to make his debut against Manchester City this weekend.
