Chelsea defender Ashley Cole has reportedly agreed a new one-year contract extension with the club, but team-mate Frank Lampard still looks set to leave in the summer.

England left-back Cole had been tipped for a move away from Stamford Bridge, with his current contract due to expire at the end of the season and talks over a new deal stalling on several occasions.

But it appears the two parties have now reached an agreement which will see the 32-year-old remain in west London until at least 2014, banishing rumours of a summer switch to Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain.

The news makes the situation regarding Lampard’s contract even more peculiar, as Chelsea still appear to be refusing the 34-year-old a new deal – despite the midfielder being able to leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Lampard became Chelsea’s second all-time leading goalscorer behind club legend Bobby Tambling with a penalty in last Saturday’s 4-0 win over Stoke. And despite protests from fans, Lampard’s team-mates and the media, the Chelsea hierarchy do not appear to be altering their stance.
