Man United celebrate a Premier League win in 1993

The unwanted Man United record Liverpool are close to matching

Liverpool were so close to ending their long wait for a league crown last season.

Having not won the title since 1990, the Reds were suddenly odds on to finish the 2013/14 campaign as winners, but it wasn't to be and Man City proved themselves to be the best team in England.

However, with the current 2014/15 season approaching the halfway point and Liverpool 18 points behind the leaders after just 12 games, the Reds are on the verge of matching the title drought endured by bitter rivals Man United.

When Liverpool's north west neighbours won the Premier League in 1993 it ended a 26-year wait to be crowned champions again, something they had achieved on seven occasions prior to their previous success in 1967.

Liverpool's previous longest title drought was 24 years, between 1923 and 1947 (and there was no league football between 1939 and 1946, due to war).

Man United: 20 titles: 1908, 1911, 1952, 1956, 1957, 1965, 1967, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013

Liverpool: 18 titles: 1901, 1906, 1922, 1923, 1947, 1964, 1966, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990

So, it looks like Liverpool have one more season before they match Man United, not in the way they would like.

25 years and counting...
