Robert Pires: Arsenal MUST keep Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to mount Premier League title charge next season

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has urged the club to do all they can to keep Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil at the Emirates Stadium this season.

The former French international - a key member of the Gunners’ famous 2003/04 ‘Invincibles’ team - caught up with talkSPORT’s racing correspondent Rupert Bell at Royal Ascot to share his thoughts on Arsene Wenger’s new contract, Arsenal’s Premier League chances and more.

Pires insists keeping Wenger for another two seasons was the right move by the club, but insists their title hopes for next season hinge on keeping their top stars - AND adding more to their ranks.

“I understand the fans and that it is very split between ‘Wenger in’ and ‘Wenger out’, but I am very happy because I think Arsene Wenger is the manager for Arsenal,” he said.

“He’s built something at Arsenal for the last 20 years… and I think the club needs stability.”

Sanchez and Ozil have been constantly linked with exits in recent months due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding their current contract situations.

Manchester City have been linked with a big-money move for Sanchez, and are reportedly growing in confidence they can get a deal worth around £50million over the line this summer.

But, speaking to talkSPORT, Pires said it was critical the star duo stay at Arsenal.

The Frenchman added: “The most important thing for the next season is to win the Premier League.

“They need to keep calm and keep Sanchez and Ozil and, why not, buy three or more players.”
