LISTEN: Tottenham striker Harry Kane admits surprise at retaining Premier League Golden Boot

Harry Kane admitted his surprise at retaining his Premier League Golden Boot after finishing the campaign on 29 goals.

The Tottenham striker notched his fifth hat-trick of the year in all competitions after scoring three times against Hull in his side’s 7-1 final day victory over Hull.

Kane saw off the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to secure the honour despite missing the best part of three months through injury.

And having coming so close to reaching the 30-goal milestone, Kane couldn’t resist having a dig at his manager, Mauricio Pochettino’s expense.

“I had a little joke with the gaffer at the end - I wanted another four to get to that 30-goal mark,” Kane told talkSPORT.

“It’s been a fantastic end to what has been a good season for us. To finish with four and three [goals] - two hat-tricks in a row - is something I’m very proud of.

“As a striker, you go into every season hoping to win that [Golden Boot] and obviously winning it last year, I was determined to be consistent and try and retain it.

“It looked doubtful throughout the season - having been out for 11 weeks in total - so to finish the way I have, I couldn’t have dreamt for anything better.

“I just have to give big thanks to my team, the coaching staff - everyone who makes me a better player - without them it wouldn’t be possible and I’m thankful to them.”

Tottenham’s victory over Hull saw the north London club finish the campaign on 86 points and seven points behind champions Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side enjoyed an unbeaten final season at White Hart Lane - securing 17 league victories from 19 games - but still fell short of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

But Kane insisted his team could not have done much more to prevent the Blues from lifting a fifth league title.

“It’s been fantastic. I don’t think we could have done much more than what we have. Obviously, you look back and our away form has been the only thing that’s really let us down this year.

“But Chelsea have won the games when they needed to and they deserved the title. We just have to congratulate them - they’ve deserved it this year - but we’ve got to use that as motivation to come back next year stronger and even better.

“We want to win trophies - we’ve made that clear - we just have to enjoy the rest now and work even harder to get better next season.”
