LISTEN: ‘I’d be surprised if Craig Shakespeare gets the full-time Leicester City job’, Mark Schwarzer tells talkSPORT

Former Leicester City goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has told talkSPORT he would be ‘surprised’ if the club give caretaker boss Craig Shakespeare the manager's job on a permanent basis.

Shakespeare has worked wonders with the Premier League champions since taking over after Claudio Ranieri’s shock sacking, rejuvenating a tired side and rescuing their season.

The decision to give the Italian the boot was met with fierce opposition from fans, but Shakespeare soon proved it was the right call. Leicester have lost just twice since his appointment, having begun his time in charge with six straight victories.

He also oversaw the final charge of the Foxes' journey to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were bravely knocked out 2-1 on aggregate by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Yet, despite his success, Shakespeare has admitted his future is not in his hands, and Schwarzer suggests the club’s ambition means they are likely to look to appoint a more experienced full-time coach.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the former Foxes glovesman said: “I think Shakespeare has done everything he can to put in his name in the hat to say, ‘I’m good enough and I can take this team forward’.

“But I don’t know, it’s going to be really interesting.

“The owners will see the opportunity now to take the club to the next level. Obviously winning the Premier League last season, having that experience in the Champions League, they’ll want to try to get back to that level.

“Obviously there’s still a long way to go to do that, and whether that’s even possible with a team like Leicester - who knows?

“But I’d probably be a little bit surprised if they give it to him full-time.”
