Rio Ferdinand believes Harry Kane has “a long way to go” before comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi can be made.

The former Manchester United defender was discussing Kane ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.

“He can be talked about at this point in time, in terms of goals alone, with Ronaldo and Messi because he has the same number of goals as them guys,” said Ferdinand.

“I’m not saying he’s comparable to them as players, because he isn’t. They’ve been doing it for ten, twelve, thirteen years at the top level.

“But he (Kane) has now put himself up there as the top goalscorer in Europe, and so he can be talked about at those levels. But he’s got a long way to go.”

There was concern among Spurs fans when Mauricio Pochettino appeared to be unsure about Kane’s availability for Saturday.

But the latest update on the striker’s fitness is a positive one.

  1. For you to even compare Harry Kane with Messi and Ronaldo suggests you are hugely impressed with Harry. There are not many clubs who can bring such a fantastic player through their youth system. Only Man U were able to do that with Giggs, Beckham etc. I can’t name one Chelsea or Man City player who is world class who has come through their academy. They can only buy the best players and will never give youth a chance. This bodes well for Spurs as good promising kids will be attracted to Spurs in the future.
