Last week reports emerged suggesting Andre Villas-Boas turned down the chance to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during his time in charge of Tottenham.

Aubameyang played for French side St Ettienne at the time. He had been repeatedly recommended to Villas-Boas, but the Spurs boss opted against buying him in the summer of 2012.

A year later the Gabon international joined Dortmund, and since then he has become one of Europe’s most prolific goal scorers.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild (via ESPN) this week, Aubameyang confirmed he nearly joined Tottenham in 2012.

“I was at Tottenham back then, had a tour of the stadium and the training ground,” said the 28-year-old. “We held talks. But after that nobody contacted me again.”

He added: “That’s definitely extra motivation for me on Wednesday. I want to score again.”

A highly motivated Aubameyang is certainly a worry for Spurs. Thankfully, at least seven Dortmund first team players are set to miss the game through injury.
