The Toon boss was at Chelsea when Schurrle was in talks over a move to London from Bayer Leverkusen.
The German international eventually moved to Stanford Bridge in 2013, for a fee that was believed to be £18million.

Stoke boss Paul Lambert is also interested in the World Cup winner with Germany.
Lambert, appointed at the Bet365 Stadium last week, used to play at Borussia and can use his contacts to tempt Schurrle on an 18-month loan deal.
Schurrle joined Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer but has not been able to break into the first team regularly.
