Harry Kane backed to overtake Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s top goalscorer by Mauricio Pochettino

Spurs boss also confident that Kane will not be sold to Real Madrid after vow by chairman Daniel Levy

MAURICIO POCHETTINO says Harry Kane will overtake Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer.

That comes after Daniel Levy’s defiant message that the England striker will not be sold this summer.

Kane, 24, will equal Teddy Sheringham as the club’s top Premier League marksman with 97 top-flight strikes if he scores against Everton at Wembley.

But for those who recognise football existed before 1992, Greaves’ historic yardsticks of 220 league goals and 266 in all competitions are the mark of true greatness.

And after club chairman Levy went on record to say he was “100 per cent confident” key players like Kane and Dele Alli would be playing for Spurs next season, boss Pochettino insisted he would become the club’s greatest of all time.

Pochettino said: “Of course Harry is going to break all the records. Sure. His quality, mentality and professionalism is top.

“I hope he will break every record. It will be difficult to beat Greaves but he is still 24 and can play ten or 12 years.”

With Real Madrid desperate to sign Kane, who has also been named the Premier League’s December  Player of the Month — Pochettino welcomed Levy’s words about key players staying, even if Spurs fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

He said: “I trust in Daniel. If he told the media and the fans it is because he will deliver it.”

Pochettino had moaned about agents, saying top players were “like companies” and he is known to be unhappy Ross Barkley chose to join Chelsea rather than Spurs.

But he says the loyalty of Kane, who has 125 Spurs goals in all competitions, makes him different to most modern players.

The Argentinian said: “Harry is special. His is not the profile of a typical offensive player. He’s special.

“His mentality makes him different — it’s amazing. That’s why I say he can spend his career in one club, like Roma legend Francesco Totti.”

Pochettino paid tribute to Everton’s ex-Spurs winger Aaron Lennon for speaking publicly of the mental-health issues he suffered last season.

The Spurs boss said: “Because Aaron spoke out, there are a lot of people ready to help people with mental-health issues.

“It’s good for him to get the love from the fans and inspire people.”
