And the 20-year-old has informed his club he would like the opportunity to move up a division from League One.

Cameron Brannagan’s arrival from Liverpool has given Oxford boss Pep Clotet cover in midfield, which Ledson hopes will help pave the way for a move.

Preston made their first move earlier in the window with an offer of around £500,000 to make him another early signing in the window.

Alex Neil has already landed striker Louis Moult and Bristol Rovers' Billy Bodin in the first few days of the window.

Ledson is on his wanted list after progressing at Everton where he made his debut at 17 under Roberto Martinez.

He signed for Oxford in 2016 to develop his career and has now played more than 50 first-team games for the League One side, catching the eye of Champ teams.

The ex-Cambridge United loanee is from Liverpool and a switch back to the North West with Preston would allow him to be much closer to his family.

He has also been selected for the Under-20s though he missed out on their World Cup triumph last year because of a knee injury.
