West Ham star Edimilson Fernandes’ World Cup hopes in balance after ankle op

Midfielder could miss the rest of the season in a major blow to the Hammers and Switzerland

WEST HAM have suffered a major blow, with Edimilson Fernandes set to miss most of the season.

The Swiss international underwent surgery on his damaged right ankle last week.

He posted a picture on social media of himself in a hospital bed with the limb wrapped in bandages.

Midfielder Fernandes made nine Hammers appearances this season before picking up his injury.

The former Sion star played 32 times last term, scoring once following a £5.5million move from his homeland.

Fears are growing in Switzerland that the 21-year-old will not be fit to make the national squad in time for next summer's World Cup finals.

Fernandes wrote on Instagram: "Hello dear fans, I just had my operation and I will see you early on the pitch.

"The operation went well.  Thanks to everyone for your messages.

However Switzerland's top-selling newspaper Blick warned: "There is a big question mark over the former Sion star's involvement at the World Cup finals in Russia next summer."
