Burnley boss Sean Dyche explains the reason why he was inspecting Old Trafford pitch before Manchester United clash

The 46-year-old was spotted examining the pitch prior to kick-off as the Clarets drew 2-2 with the Red Devils on Boxing Day

SEAN DYCHE has explained the bizarre reason why he inspected the Manchester United pitch prior to kick-off on Boxing Day.

The Burnley boss was spotted walking around looking at the turf intently, before his side held the Red Devils to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour sent Clarets fans into delirium as they led 2-0 going into the second half at the Theatre of Dreams.

But a Jesse Lingard brace snatched a point for Jose Mourinho's side, as Burnley threatened to claim yet another scalp on the road.

They picked up three points against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, while they also drew with Tottenham and Liverpool away from Turf Moor.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Dyche was asked why he was examining the pitch, he said: "Well, because there is a standard size now.

"So home advantage is not a home advantage any more, every pitch need to be the same size.

"So I check it out to reassure myself they all are the same size and (make sure) the players know that.

"You remember the myths on the past ‘this is a massive pitch’ - well it’s not a massive pitch anymore, it’s the same size.

"It has to be by the rules of the Premier League."

Dyche's reputation continues to grow after a stunning start to the season.

Burnley picked up 40 points last campaign, but they have already accumulated 33 points this term as they push for a European spot.

Next up for the Clarets is away tie at the John Smith's Stadium against Huddersfield on Saturday.
