The former West Brom and Stoke has emerged as the prime contender to replace the young coach.

Pulis has been unemployed since being dismissed from The Hawthorns in November.
The 59-year-old is said to be interested the role, with Boro ready to make their approach.

Monk was appointed by Steve Gibson in June but has been unable to keep pace with the league leaders as the season has progressed.

Boro currently sit 19 points behind leaders Wolves, in ninth place.

It is understood that Monk failed to win over many of the senior players in the dressing room.

If Pulis were to sign for Boro he would, as Monk was, expect to be backed by the board in the transfer window this January.

Prior to his sacking Monk commented on the state of his squad claiming it was "fractured" and "on the floor".

For Boro the hope is that Pulis can raise the spirits of this failing squad and help them mount a successful promotion challenge in the second half on the season.
