Manchester United want Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid in £27million deal as Jose Mourinho looks to boost midfield options
Kovacic has struggled to hold down a place under Zinedine Zidane and could be arriving as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Maroune Fellaini exit
MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly preparing a £27million bid for Real Madrid star Mateo Kovacic.
The Mirror claims Jose Mourinho is targeting the 23-year-old Croatian as he looks to boost his options in midfield.
Club-record signing Paul Pogba has been missing through injury and suspension at various times this season, forcing the Red Devils to change their style of play dramatically.
Kovacic is a similar type of player to Pogba, possessing the technique and composure to run with, and play, the ball with speed.
He has struggled to hold down a spot under Zinedine Zidane following a £25m move from Inter Milan in the summer of 2015.
And Kovacic could be open to join United as Mourinho prepares to receive offers for outcast Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Marouane Fellaini could also be on his way out after rejecting a new contract offer.
And reports continue to link United with an audacious approach for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil.

Mourinho confirmed there could indeed be exits next month, saying: “I think for the right price. That’s my approach as a manager, in cases where the club advises me. I think every player has a price.
“If a player is not happy, if a player brings with him the request with the number that we consider a good number for us – like it happened for us last season with Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin – I would never say no.”
