Lukaku's record now stands at one goal in his last 11 matches after he spurned several good chances during United's 4-2 victory at Watford on Tuesday.

And his manager revealed what he believes is the solution to his 24-year-old striker's woes.

He said: "I think he needs a big contract with his boots because he doesn't have a contract with any brand.

"That's why he's playing in black boots."

After a fine half-volleyed opener, he went one better as he curled home a free-kick into the top corner to leave his boss, and Twitter, stunned.

The 32-year-old appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford earlier this year, but he has become one of the first names on Mourinho's team sheet this season.

"I was surprised that Paul Pogba gave him permission.

"At his age, Young's playing better than ever and I couldn't be more happy with him."

After suffering defeat to his old club Chelsea earlier this month, Mourinho's men have bounced back with three successive Premier League victories.

And Mourinho is delighted to have have got nine important points on the board ahead of the crunch showdowns.

He added: "It's important we have three wins in a row, nine points in three matches is good, and away from home we lost against Chelsea, and drew with Liverpool, and lost to Huddersfield so we needed to win here, we did well."
