'Sperm that never makes it'

Gary Lineker leads Twitter slating of Karim Benzema as Real Madrid forward’s sitter saved at point-blank range by Hugo Lloris

TWITTER opened both barrels on Karim Benzema's performance last night as he missed the chance to help Real Madrid beat Tottenham.

The Los Blancos striker had a memorable sitter saved by Hugo Lloris, in what will go down as one of the most incredible saves in Spurs history.

But social media did not hold back on Benzema, with former Barcelona and Tottenham striker Gary Lineker leading the chorus of fans who do not rate the 29-year-old.

BT Sport and BBC pundit Lineker said: "Is it me or is Benzema a tad overrated? A goal every other game in a team as strong as Real Madrid is nada especial. Decent not great."

One Twitter user described Benzema as "the sperm that never makes it" while another hilariously joked: "If Benzema had shot Tupac, he would still be alive."

While Real Madrid were the better side, it certainly was not as one-sided as the European champions are used to at home.

Tottenham took the lead as Harry Kane raced on to a Serge Aurier cross - only for his marker Raphael Varane to deflect the ball into his own net.

Then Aurier went from provider to dunce as he stupidly went to ground and fouled Tony Kroos after sliding in.

Cristiano Ronaldo then converted the resulting penalty as the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

But Kane and Christian Eriksen also had massive chances for the away side, as Real Madrid failed to shine and Spurs made life difficult for them in midfield.

Yet Benzema bore the brunt of the blame for Real's wastefulness in front of goal, as the tweets below show:
