Manchester United looking to expand Old Trafford capacity to 88,000 by adding extra tier to Sir Bobby Charlton Stand

MANCHESTER UNITED are planning to increase the capacity of Old Trafford to 88,000.

United already boast the biggest club ground in Britain with 75,643 seats - but they are looking at ways to expand on that number.

And high on their list is adding another tier to the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, the old South Stand, according to the Mail.

Demand for season tickets far outstrips the capacity at Old Trafford, and United are looking at ways to accommodate more - particularly once rebuilding work on a new disabled section is finished.

The club are constructing a new section for disabled supporters which is due to be ready by 2020 - but that will reduce the overall capacity to 73,000.

So there is an even greater need for the club to find a way to add to the size of Old Trafford to ensure it is able to keep up with demand.

The club have looked at developing the Sir Bobby Charlton stand in the past, but encountered problems because of the train line that runs behind it.

That left United with the prospect of having to demolish some homes and also build a new tunnel for the rail line.

But since last looking at plans, the technology used in building stadiums has moved on, and there is the belief that could add 7,500 more seats.

Added to that, they could then start work on two new quadrants in the corners of the stand, taking the total capacity to 88,000.

That would seed them move just short of the Wembley capacity of 90,000 - although they would still be behind Barcelona's Nou Camp as the biggest ground in Europe.

One of the options also being looked into is a way to incorporate a new safe-standing section into Old Trafford.

The club have canvassed the opinion of their fans and the feeling is they would be in favour of such a move.

But before that could happen there would need to be a change in the law surrounding standing in grounds, which has been in place since the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster.
