Costa was all smiles after his side went 1-0 ahead through Antoine Griezmann's penalty.

But that grin was wiped off his face as Antonio Conte's side ruined his night in the dying embers of the clash at the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Costa's long-awaited £67million move to his former club was only completed 24 hours before their Champions League tie.

The 28-year-old had fallen out with ex-boss Conte after the Italian told him he wasn't in his plans by text message.

Tonight was the first time the pair had seen each other since the FA Cup final defeat on May 27.

The exiled striker would later slam Chelsea for "treating me like a criminal" with the way he was forced out of the club.

And so he was desperate for Atleti to have the bragging rights in the tightly contested Group C match.

The crucial 2-1 victory leaves Chelsea top of the group with Atletico struggling in third, three points behind Roma.

Costa can't play for Atleti until their transfer ban comes to an end in January.

He bagged 64 goals in 135 games during his first spell at the club to earn a move to Chelsea in 2014.
