Sadio Mane red card: Footballing world split on the controversial decision… even the Neville brothers can’t agree

Straight sending-off appears to have gone down as one of the most polarising decisions in Premier League history

THE footballing world has been divided over the controversial Sadio Mane red card... and even the Neville brothers can't agree.

Liverpool's flying winger clattered into Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson late in the first-half.

While Mane appeared to have his eye firmly on the ball, he did manage to boot the City stopper in the face, forcing him to be stretchered off.

Following the incident, the footballing world was left split down the middle... with nothing summing the situation up better than the Neville brothers' argument.

While Gary claimed the red card had "spoiled" the game, brother Phil claimed it was the right call.

He tweeted: "Red card for me - good decision Jon Moss."

However, he did tone it down later, adding: "Red card has spoilt this game - but that's not Jon Moss fault - his position was fantastic to see the challenge and show red card."

Kolo Toure tended to agree with the ref, saying: "To be honest when you look at the action, a ref would give yellow card most of the time.

"But Mane is late. The goalkeeper anticipates the football. Mane's feet were really, really high.

Meanwhile ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher said: "Yes it's a red card. I didn't initially think it was but it's the boot into the face.

"The one argument people may use is he had his eyes on the ball. It doesn't matter. It's still endangering an opponent."

Thierry Henry added: "It’s an unfortunate 50-50. The goalkeeper has to go for it and so does the player."

Moss even saw his Wikipedia page changed in honour of the decision... that and more from the wacky world of Twitter, below.
