'STYLE DIDN'T FIT'

Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen turned down by LILLE in summer because of ‘concerns over striker’s technique’

LILLE say they rejected the chance to sign Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen because their boss Marcelo Bielsa does not rate his technique.

Spurs made the misfiring Dutch striker available in the final days of the transfer window last week.

His misery in North London came to a temporary end on Friday when he secured a season-long loan move to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce.

But French side Lille rejected the opportunity to bring in the 23-year-old as their manager was not convinced by his abilities.

Their owner Gerard Lopez told SFR Sport: "I offered Marcelo the chance of bringing in experienced players, he didn't want them.

"We offered him [Wilfried] Bony, for example. He wanted a group that corresponded to his needs. He wanted a group he had chosen with [sporting director] Luis Campos.

"Janssen? Technically, his style of play didn't fit into the project Marcelo wants to create."

Spurs splashed out £17million to bring in the Holland international from AZ Alkmaar last year to help ease the burden on Harry Kane.

But after a miserable campaign that only saw him fire two Premier League goals in 27 appearances Spurs have decided to cut their losses.

They signed Spanish forward Fernando Llorente from Swansea last week to bolster their front line.

That led to Janssen being left out of Tottenham's Champions League squad, with long-term injury absentee Erik Lamela the only other senior player to be axed.

However, his manager Mauricio Pochettino had insisted his career was not finished in the capital.

He said this week: "Yes of course [he has a future]. The next question is why he is not in Champions League squad. That is about numbers.

"We only have 17 places [with eight home-grown players required in the selection]. We are 19, so him and Lamela we decided [to leave out].

“But in January we check again to see if we change the names in the squad. But, yes, he has a future like other players here.”

But he seems to have had a change of heart by allowing the frontman to depart.

The summer transfer window was one the craziest we have ever seen.
