CHELSEA and Tottenham reportedly failed with beat-the-deadline attempts to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wanted the Belgium right-back to replace Kyle Walker, who left for Manchester City in a £50million deal.

Meanwhile, Blues manager Antonio Conte hoped to add 25-year-old Meunier to his squad as cover for Cesar Azpilicueta.

According to La Derniere Heure, the Premier League champions and runners-up made approaches for the defender after PSG signed Brazilian Dani Alves from Juventus.

But the super-rich Ligue 1 club refused to let the Belgian ace leave.

They insisted they want two top-class players for every position in their team.

A source close to Meunier said: "Thomas was at the top of both Chelsea and Tottenham's wish lists.

"But PSG refused to let him go."

Spurs instead paid PSG £23m for their third choice right-back Serge Aurier after the Ivory Coast international resolved his UK visa issues.

And Chelsea signed Torino's Italy defender Davide Zappacosta for £25m on deadline day.

Meunier has just helped Belgium become the first European country to qualify for next year's World Cup finals.

He scored a hat-trick in their 9-0 win over Gibraltar last week.

The former Standard Liege junior spent five years with Club Brugge, winning the Belgian Cup in 2015 and the 2016 league title.

PSG paid £6.3m for him last year, and he has since won the French Cup, League Cup and two Champions Trophies with the Parc des Princes outfit.
