Bristol City 1 Aston Villa 1: Josh Onomah rescues a point for Steve Bruce’s men after Jamie Paterson strike

Honours even in Championship clash at Ashton Gate with two second-half goals in space of four minutes

Josh Onomah opened his club account to rescue a point for Villa.

Spurs striker Onomah, 20, is on a season-long loan with Steve Bruce’s side and he saw his 25-yard shot in the 65th minute deflect off unfortunate midfielder Marlon Pack and past helpless keeper Frank Fielding.

But winger Jamie Paterson had opened the scoring for the Robins with his second goal in six games five minutes earlier.

Midfielder Pack had two low shots blocked after former Chelsea and England skipper John Terry had brought down striker Bobby Reid inches outside the box, but Paterson was first to react to slot in the second of two attempts from nine yards.

Villa came close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute when former youth prospect Andre Green cut in from the left, but keeper Frank Fielding beat away the winger’s shot from the edge of the box which was heading for the far corner.

But Paterson fired a 25-yard effort straight at Villa’s Manchester United loanee keeper Sam Johnstone in the 15th minute as they started to dominate possession.

Diedhiou did well to shrug off attention from Terry four minutes later, but Johnstone did well to block the Senegal international’s ten yard shot on the turn from a tight angle on the right.

But City had to work hard to keep Villa out as the game edged towards the break.

Fielding dashed from his line to block a shot from Egypt winger Ahmed Elmohamady in the 41st minute and former Villan Nathan Baker took the force of midfielder Conor Hourihane’s goal bound effort full in the face in the dying seconds.

Two minutes into the second half striker Keenan Davis split the City defence to pick out a run from Onomah, but once again Fielding did well to get behind the Spurs loanee’s low angled strike from the right side of the area.

Former Genoa full back Eros Pisano was unlucky to see a chip from the right side of the box come back off the far post in the 77th minute as City pushed forward.
