The free agent has left Utrecht at the end of his contract and could be a shock solution for Grayson who is building a new squad on a tight budget.

Ruiter had an injury hit finish to his time in Holland but has played over 200 games in the top flight of his homeland.

So far this window Grayson has signed striker James Vaughan from Bury and Everton winger Aiden McGeady.

He has also landed Toffees full-backs Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway on loan.

Former Black Cats right-back Javier Manquillo today signed for rivals Newcastle for £4.5million.

The Spaniard, 23, joins from Atletico Madrid on a four-year deal having started 15 Prem games for David Moyes last season.

Toon boss Rafa Benitez said: "He can play both sides of the defence and he has a lot of motivation because he knows he has a point to prove.

“He can still improve but he has played for Spain at under-21 level and that is because he is a good player, so hopefully he will show that form here.”
