And Sandefjord head scout Terje Liverod confirmed the club are trying to make the transfer happen.

He said: “I have known Diego for years and can confirm he is open to a move to Sandjeform and followed our 3-0 victory over Tromso in the Eliteserien online.

“We are working on a deal to get Forlan to Sandefjord.

“The opportunity to sign him is there, but we are talking about a lot of money, so we have to be realistic.”

Liverod highlighted Forlan’s incredible professionalism as the driving force behind their determination to sign him.

“Despite being 38, he is the most professional player I have ever seen.

“It would be an incredible signing and Forlan would completely revolutionise the squad as well as the entire region.”

Forlan joined United in 2002 and was initially a joke figure at the club after taking almost seven months to score his first goal from open play.

However, he soon became a cult hero after netting two in a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield a year later.

Forlan left Old Trafford for Villarreal in 2004, and his career shot into orbit.

He won the La Liga and European Golden Boot in his first season and helped the Yellow Submarine reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2006.

He joined Atletico Madrid a year later and was once again the leading marksman in Spain, while he also scored twice in the 2010 Europa League final victory over Fulham.

Forlan was voted the best player at that summer’s World Cup and earned a move to dethroned European champions Inter Milan a year later.

However, he struggled in Italy and the Uruguayan joined Brazilian side Internacional after just one season.

He then played for Japanese side Cerezo Osaka and hometown club Penarol, before signing for Mumbai.

And he could now be set for a final swansong in Scandinavia.
