That has lead Inter now to ask for cash plus a player for their winger who they claim is worth around £50million.

Inter’s Director of Football Walter Sabbatini said: "Spalletti has asked not to sell Perisic. He wants Perisic as one of his players because he is fantastic.

"Inter wouldn’t like to sell him but at the same time the club doesn’t want to have an unhappy player.

"One thing is certain – the price of our players will be set by Inter Milan. We hope Perisic will stay but we will know more in the next day.

"If Perisic will leave, we want money and a player and we expect Perisic over these next days will show good behaviour."

Martial joined United for the 2015-16 season for a fee of £36million which could rise to £56million based on his success and performances.

He did have a good first season finishing top scorer with 17 goals from 49 games but he lost his way last season hitting just eight goals.

It lead to some public criticism from Mourinho who said last April "‘Do I think Anthony is player with great potential? Yes. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes. But he needs to give me things that I like.”
