Romelu Lukaku set for Manchester United medical in Los Angeles as he closes in on £75m switch to Old Trafford

Everton striker set to join Jose Mourinho's men having been linked with a Chelsea return this summer

JOSE MOURINHO is close to completing a £75million swoop for Romelu Lukaku — to leave Chelsea fuming.

Lukaku, 24, was due to have an overnight medical at the UCLA campus in California ahead of his switch from Everton.

Old Trafford boss Mourinho will land the Belgian in a classic coup that blind-sided the Blues — with the striker agreeing a five-year deal worth £250,000 a week.

Chelsea believed as late as Thursday morning that Lukaku had set his heart on a return to Stamford Bridge.

The champions were waiting until they received an acceptable offer for want-away Diego Costa before moving for Lukaku.

But the Londoners were left stunned by Mourinho’s swoop.

Lukaku, currently on holiday in Los Angeles with United star Paul Pogba, will now become the fourth-most expensive player in world football.

He is expected to wear the No 9 shirt vacated by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left last month.

United switched targets after Real Madrid refused to compromise on their £85m valuation for Spanish striker Alvaro Morata.

For Blues boss Antonio Conte, missing out on the man he believed was a certainty to move back down to London will only increase his anger at Chelsea’s failure to land his key targets.

SunSport revealed last Sunday that the Special One wanted Lukaku but would have to sort out the bad blood between them.

Lukaku still holds a grudge against Mourinho, who sold him to the Toffees in 2014 for £28m.
