'It was tempting'

Michael Keane rejected Man United for Everton move but ex-Burnley star admits return to Old Trafford was tempting

England international is the latest big-money arrival at Goodison Park but he could have ended up at Old Trafford

MICHAEL KEANE admits he was tempted to rejoin old side Manchester United before quitting Burnley for Everton.

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman beat Jose Mourinho to the England international’s signature on Monday in a £25million deal which could rise to £30m.

Keane was impressed by Everton’s vision for the future, with the Merseyside outfit already splashing the cash on the likes of Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez.

However, Keane admits he was almost swayed by a return return to Old Trafford instead, with the chance of revitalising his United career nearly too good to turn down.

The 24-year-old told Sky Sports: “Of course it was tempting [to rejoin United].

“It’s your boyhood club but you have got to take your heart out of it sometimes and think what’s best for you. I feel as if this is the best place for me to come and continue my development.

“It’s a club with such a big history and a great fan base so I can’t wait to pull on the shirt and play for this club.”

Keane’s snub means Mourinho is on the hunt for another centre-back, despite signing Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

And reports claim the Special One is now targeting Borussia Dortmund ace Marc Bartra, who was injured in the bomb attack on their team bus in April.

The ex-Barcelona youngster has only been in Germany for a year but could be tempted to up sticks for a Premier League payday.

United are also confident of sealing a deal for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata this week, although the two sides are yet to agree on a transfer fee.
