Dimitri Payet is the fifth-best midfielder in the Premier League this season… despite being widely criticised and sold in January
French midfielder was shipped off to Marseille in the last transfer window after coming under fire at the London Stadium
DIMITRI PAYET has all-but been forgotten already in England having been sold by West Ham in January.
The French midfielder, 30, had a stunning 2015-16 campaign in east London before lighting up Euro 2016 with host nation France.
However, Payet failed to reproduce in the 2016-17 season, was dumped to the bench by Hammers boss Slaven Bilic and then sold in January.
But despite missing the plenty of the first half of the season in England and all of the second - after making the trip across the Channel - Payet is still the fifth best creator in the Premier League.
The Frenchman created 74 chances in the Prem this season, with six of those assists.
Payet's tally of 74 is level with Manchester City's David Silva - who is ahead by one assist - and behind only three other stars.
Only Everton's Ross Barkley (77), City star Kevin De Bruyne (81) and Tottenham's Christian Eriksen (93) have created more opportunities for team-mates in 2016-17.
In fact, Payet still ranks above the likes of Chelsea star Eden Hazard (66), Arsenal ace Mesut Ozil (69) and Liverpool's chief creator Philippe Coutinho (56).
Since shipping off to Marseille, Payet has turned out 11 times, scoring four times - including most recently in the 4-0 win over St Etienne on April 16.
Most famously, the Frenchman scored a stunning, cheeky lob against Lorient, as well as an absolute screamer against Dijon.
