Manchester United transfer news: Stefan de Vrij wanted by Jose Mourinho in sensational £30million deal next summer

Lazio star intends to leave Serie A next summer as Red Devils also eye move for Southampton's Virgil van Dijk

MANCHESTER UNITED are in pole position to sign Lazio star Stefan de Vrij, according to reports.

The Italians have slapped a £30million price-tag on their key defender after he told them he intends to leave next summer.

Il Messaggero claims Lazio are still hopeful Dutchman De Vrij will pen a new contract but concede he is probably heading abroad.

It’s said that United are leading the race for his signature despite additional interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Red Devils are believed to be on the hunt for a new centre-back despite signing Eric Bailly in the last transfer window.

As reported by SunSport yesterday, United are also interested in a January move for Southampton star and De Vrij’s international teammate Virgil van Dijk.

The former Celtic man only agreed a six-year deal in 2015 but could now be heading to Old Trafford in a big-money switch.

Chelsea are also reportedly keen, with Van Dijk’s speed and technique making him the perfect candidate to play in Antonio Conte’s back three.
