Manchester United star Michael Carrick sends classy message to Man City rival David Silva
Red Devils captain sends out heartfelt message to Spaniard who is struggling with family problems
MICHAEL CARRICK has reached out to his fierce rival David Silva for reassurance during a tough period for the midfielder.
Silva released a statement on social media saying that his newborn son Mateo is fighting for his life in hospital after an extremely premature birth.
United skipper Carrick told Silva to focus on his son, rather than football at this horrible time.
He wrote on Twitter: "Some things are much more important than football. All the best to you and your family David, especially to your little man."
The 31-year-old started in City's 3-1 win over Watford on Tuesday night, after missing out on previous games against Newcastle and Crystal Palace.
'Personal reasons' were cited as the cause of his absence, until Wednesday night when Silva posted a heartbreaking statement on Twitter.
Silva said: "I want to thank all of you for the love and good wishes received in the last few weeks, special thanks for my team mates, the manager and all at the club for understanding my situation.
"I want to share with you the birth of my son Mateo, who was born extremely preterm and is fighting day by day with the help of the medical team."
The Spaniard received overwhelming support from fans, and fellow players alike, with the tweet garnering over 52,000 likes.
That support included the likes of Michael Carrick, who wished the best for the Manchester City play-maker.
Carrick is yet to feature for United this season, after undergoing treatment for an irregular heartbeat in November of last year.
The England midfielder joined the Red Devils in 2006, after a long career in the Premier League for West Ham and Tottenham.
