The Reds new-boy admits his long-standing admiration for the Old Trafford icon ahead of international showdown
NEMANJA Matic looks set to win over even more Manchester United fans after admitting his childhood idol was Roy Keane.
The Serbian, who will come face to face with Republic of Ireland assistant boss Keane tonight when their two nations meet in a World Cup qualifier, is now occupying the Manchester United legend's old role at Old Trafford following his £40m summer switch from Chelsea.
The 29-year-old suggested a history of following the Reds after claiming that he had admired the Irishman from a young age.
The Serbian is now preparing for a top-of-the-table clash against the Republic in Dublin this evening.
Ahead of the crucial clash, the former Chelsea ace said: "I will be happy to see him [Keane] and have a chat with him.
"He is a legend of Manchester United and was a very important player for them for a long time.
"When I was young, when I started playing football, he was at his best and was a great player, one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
"I tried to take from every player something good to improve myself, and he was one. I am happy now that I play in the same club as he played."
Matic has quickly established himself as a fan-favourite under the management of Jose Mourinho.
Keane held the prestigious captain's armband at Old Trafford for eight controversial, yet very successful years.
The Irish tough guy won 17 major titles with United and is the joint-most successful Irish footballer in history.
Manchester United are currently unbeaten in the Premier League, with Matic featuring for 90 minutes in every game so far.
