Paul Scholes questions Romelu Lukaku after Man United’s 2-0 win over Benfica

The Manchester United legend questions why Romelu Lukaku didn't take the second-half penalty

Paul Scholes has questioned why Romelu Lukaku didn’t take Manchester United’s penalty in a 2-0 win against Benfica at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils welcomed the Portuguese side to Old Trafford in search of another three points to take the Red Devils to the brink of qualification to the knockout phase.

Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku has been unable to score in their last three games in the Premier League to raise questions about the striker’s confidence.

Nemanja Matic’s long-range shot deflected off the woodwork before rebounding back into the Manchester United goal off Mile Svilar’s head to break the deadlock.

England international Marcus Rashford came off the bench to win a 75th-minute spot-kick and Lukaku picked up the ball to take the penalty.

However, Ander Herrera went to take the ball off Lukaku before Mourinho instructed Daley Blind to take the kick and the Netherlands international finished in style.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes felt that Lukaku should have demanded the ball and taken the penalty given his recent drought.

“He has to demand it himself,” Scholes told BT Sport. “He might be short on confidence.

“He should push everyone out of the way and say ‘I’m getting on the score sheet’.”

Manchester United signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils will make the trip to Chelsea in the next top-flight fixture at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
