Tom Werner refutes report Amanda Staveley bid £1.5bn to buy Liverpool

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner says there is "no truth" to a report that claimed owners Fenway Sports Group rejected a £1.5 billion offer to buy the Premier League club.

Abu Dhabi news outlet The National" reported on Thursday that a group led by Amanda Staveley recently bid an initial £1.2bn with the potential to raise to $300 million more, based on performance.

The report claimed the deal was "killed at the eleventh hour" by Fenway, but Werner said there was no truth to the "rumours."

"We have better things to do than batting down rumours about negotiations with Ms Staveley," Werner told the Liverpool Echo. "However, there's no truth to them."

In May, auditing giant KPMG valued Liverpool at €1.260bn, the eighth-highest in the world.

Staveley has been heavily linked to buying Newcastle, which has been put up for sale by owner Mike Ashley. She was photographed at St James Park for Newcastle's game against Liverpool on Oct. 1.

Reports have placed the price of a potential Newcastle sale between $300-500 million.
