Liverpool's defensive errors cannot continue - Joel Matip

Joel Matip says Liverpool's defensive errors away from home cannot continue and accepted that it is his responsibility to "stop" them.

After suffering a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Liverpool have now conceded 15 goals away from home, which is the most in the Premier League so far this season -- three more than bottom side Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp decided to substitute Dejan Lovren after 31 minutes at Wembley on Sunday, but the Liverpool manager afterwards stressed that Matip was not much better and could have easily been the centre-half hooked.

"It cannot go like this," Matip told Sky Sports. "It cannot be that we concede that many goals away. I'm a defender and I should take care of this.

"We gave them the opportunity. It was not that they played the perfect ball with our mistakes. We have to take care of them and have to stop them.

"'They were the better team. We only came back for a short time [in the game] and that is not enough to win against Tottenham. We'll try to strike back next week."

Joe Gomez partnered Matip at centre-back for the rest of the game against Tottenham, and Klopp has said there is an "open race" as to who starts against Huddersfield Town at Anfield on Saturday.
