In 2012, ahead of the London Olympics, Gabon's football team took to the east end suburbs of Newcastle to play Heaton Stannington in a warm-up game.
Aubameyang was the star of the team and lived up to his name - scoring twice in the first half before being taken off at half-time - as Gabon went on to win the match 4-0.
Joe Wear, the man tasked with marking Aubameyang, did not have ideal preparations ahead of the big occasion - he spent the morning on a 10km jog around the Quayside in Newcastle.
Now usually accustomed to arriving for a game in a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, Aubameyang arrived at Heaton Stannington in far less extravagant fashion - in the back of a Vauxhall Astra.
The Gabon squad arrived together on the team bus, but 10 minutes after their arrival Heaton Stannington's assistant manager Geoff Walker received word that the visitor's star player, Aubameyang, had left his boots at the team hotel in Gateshead.
Aubameyang, Walker, a security guard and one of the Gabon coaching staff bundled into the small family car to collect the missing boots and the rest, as they say, is history.
