Sky Sports Premier League predictor: Tottenham to win the title?

Dele Alli

The stats-based Sky Sports Predictor is back for the new season - and it's tipping Tottenham to win the Premier League title.

Reigning champions Chelsea are set to slip into the runners-up spot ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City, according to the predictive algorithm.

How does it work?

The Sky Sports predictor is based on a system called Elo, originally set up to rate chess players. It takes into account form, who your team still has left to play, and how well a team has done in previous seasons.

Liverpool would narrowly miss out on Champions League qualification in fifth, while Jose Mourinho's Manchester United would finish sixth for a second successive season.

The Predictor does not factor transfer activity, with Manchester City poaching Spurs' right-back Kyle Walker for £50m and spending another £153.8m on additional signings.

In contrast, Tottenham are the only Premier League club not to have signed one player this summer - but the algorithm backs the London club to claim the title on form alone.

At the other end of the table, it's bad news for Huddersfield in their inaugural Premier League season - with a predicted immediate return to the Championship, joined by Watford and Burnley.

But newly-promoted Newcastle avoid the drop with an impressive 12th-place finish, while Brighton narrowly secure top-flight status.
