Andre Silva transfer would be a bad idea for Everton

Blues already have too many strikers

Just a few days ago Sam Allardyce indicated to the media that he might be interested in another striker - in addition to Cenk Tosun - if they could tell him where to find one (paraphrased).

Sure enough, Italian media (via TalkSport) are reporting that Everton may hold an interest in young Portuguese striker Andre Silva.

Silva arrived in Milan for a fee of around €38 million last summer, but has only scored eight goals for club – all of which have come in the Europa League.

According to Italian newspaper Quotidiano Sportivo, the Rossineri (sic!) are keen to cut their losses with Everton ready to pounce.

The Toffees would be forced to part with around £40 million to bring the striker to Goodison Park, as Milan look to recoup some of the fee they paid just six months ago.

Beyond the fact that the rumored transfer fee is eye watering, Everton already have too many strikers. Tosun isn’t going anywhere, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs playing time in order to continue developing. The market for Sandro Ramirez seems to have dried up, too, and though there is some chatter around Oumar Niasse, who knows how that will work out. And then Henry Onyekuru should be here next season too.

As long as Allardyce is going to continue fielding a one-striker system, four #9’s is simply too many cooks in the kitchen, much less five.

Furthermore, the Blues desperately need to fill out their roster elsewhere first. A new starting quality left back is an absolute requirement, and they could also use another midfielder and another winger.

It isn’t that Andre Silva is a bad player - he’s extremely talented and highly regarded in the international scene, to the point of regularly starting for Portugal alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

To get a better read on Silva, we briefly spoke to James from the AC Milan Offside, a fellow SB Nation blog.

Andre Silva was a great signing for Milan, however he hasn’t enjoyed a great start to his career at the Rossoneri. When he has featured, he’s been electric, but it’s only really been in European competition. Milan have preferred Nikola Kalinic and Patrick Cutrone to Silva so far in Serie A.

There’s no real reason for Silva to be benched, but he’s not really the finished product just yet. He’s always looking to gun forward, and in style - but there’s just a little bit of inconsistency to his game right now that he will need to iron out. Still, he should be starting ahead of Kalinic.

It’d be incredibly surprising to see Silva leave, as he’s going to be a good player - that being said, a big fee might be all the difference.

A fee that doesn’t make sense in Everton’s current situation. A player that doesn’t fit a need, and a player who is in the middle of an objectively poor season (despite it largely not being his fault).

Sounds great!
