Everton might return for Bundesliga transfer target in January

According to major German media outlet Bild, via TalkSport, Everton look set to reprise their interest in Werder Bremen midfielder Thomas Delaney, likely during the winter transfer window.

It’s said that the Blues would be rivaled by Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur. After Ronald Koeman and company allegedly made an £8m bid last winter, apparently the Bundesliga side are now seeking around £13m for the Danish international.

The main problem with this idea is that Thomas Delaney isn’t any good at football.

Everton are well stocked at central midfield. Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies, Davy Klaassen, and Muhamed Besic are all capable players, and who knows - James McCarthy might remember how to play football, too.

If anything, the Toffees need a backup for Morgan Schneiderlin, which Thomas Delaney is decidedly not capable of being. Schneiderlin (and Gareth Barry before him) is in the side for his incredibly wide range of passing skills and defensive ability. In 2016/17, Delaney completed less than 70% of his passes, and registered negligible at best defensive contributions.

As the radar above indicates, the 26 year old Dane is such an unremarkable player that even if Werder Bremen were offering him to Everton for free, I’m not sure that the Blues should take him.

More midfield depth? Fine, sure. Thomas Delaney? Pass.
