Williams excited to be reunited with Sigurdsson at Everton

After convincing his former teammate to join him in the Ronald Koeman-led revolution at Everton, veteran defender Ashley Williams is looking forward to playing with Gylfi Sigurdsson this season.

The two played together at Swansea City for two years, and also previous to that when the Icelander was there on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking to evertonfc.com, here’s what Williams had to say about the playmaker -

“He’s a player of high quality. He understands his position very well, is a good set-piece taker and pops up with goals and assists as well, so for me he’s a good signing.

“I enjoyed playing with him before. He’s the type of player teammates like to play with.

“I’m pleased he’s finally joined. He’s a nice guy as well. I’m sure he’ll fit in well and be made to feel as welcome as I was.

“It’s like all the signings we’ve made, he’s another good player. We wanted him for a while and finally got him, so I’m sure the gaffer is happy… as we are, as players.”

During the introductory press conference for the player yesterday, manager Koeman revealed he’d had his eye on Sigurdsson since the beginning of last season for the Blues. Williams himself was part of that rebuild that is now into its third transfer window.

“This is why I was excited to join myself. I could see where the Club was going. We’ve made a lot of signings and, hopefully, we can improve on last season.

“There’s a buzz around Everton at the minute and everyone is excited for the season.”

Williams was also complimentary about his teammate, saying he would fit right in with the Blues squad.

“Gylfi is a nice guy, someone who I’ve kept in touch with since I left Swansea and I’m happy he’s here. I consider him a friend, he’s easy-going and someone who everybody gets on with.

“With his assists and set pieces – and in open play he understands football and knows what he should be doing – his attacking ability will be key for the team.

“Out of possession he is very good, he puts in a big shift and works hard, so, hopefully, he can add a lot to us.

“I enjoyed playing with him and I’m excited now he’s come to Everton. I think he is one of the best midfielders in the league, as he’s showed for a number of seasons.”
